What is the standard ACA Open Enrollment?

The ACA Open Enrollment is the time when individuals and families can buy a new health plan or make changes to their current health plan. Plans that are effective on January 15th have an Open Enrollment Period from November 1st - January 15th of the year after.

  • Consumers, including current enrollees, generally need to choose a plan by December 15 for full year coverage to start on January 1. Plans selected after December 15 and by the January 15 Open Enrollment deadline will generally end February 1.
  • It is important to sign up for insurance during this period and pay your first month’s premium. With health coverage, you will have the peace of mind that comes with knowing that you and your family are protected in case the unexpected happens.

If you don’t enroll in an ACA-compliant health insurance plan by the end of open enrollment, your buying options will likely be very limited for the coming year. Open enrollment won’t come around again until the following November, with coverage effective the first of the following year.

Whether you’re new to the individual market or have been buying your own health insurance for years, you likely have questions.
